Callanish
Isle of Lewis, Scotland, 1999 There can't be many Neolithic sites where you can have the place to yourself for long enough to take a complete panorama. The archaeologist Aubrey Burl speculates that a local legend may reflect real events. He suggests that "the avenue at least may have been planned and constructed by dark-haired Irishmen from the south." I'd like to think so. I certainly felt drawn to the place, although my hair isn't as dark as it used to be. |
