Red Seaweed
(unknown)
Isle of Lewis, Scotland, 1999 The photosynthetic pigments which give red seaweeds their colour, phycoerythrins and phycobilins, are readily denatured by strong sunlight. Most red seaweeds don't grow high on the shore, where they are exposed to bright light for long periods. This seaweed was growing near the high water mark in Loch Ròg an Ear. |
